A Review of Windows Defender

Microsoft’s built-in antivirus program which is now dubbed Windows Security, doesn’t require an installation or subscription which means it provides an abundance of value at no cost. The product is incredibly well-regarded by the world’s leading antivirus labs, and offers solid malware protection without impacting system performance. It also offers a variety of useful features, including security against ransomware and a password manager. It isn’t equipped with some of the more important features found in premium antivirus suites and isn’t particularly user-friendly.

Security against threats and viruses include the usual quick, full and custom scans. It also includes an intense offline scan mode to combat the most difficult to remove threats. The firewall and network module is simple to use, however it’s not quite as comprehensive as other products. Its biggest disadvantage is that it only covers Windows devices. If you wish to protect the security of an Android or Mac phone, you’ll require an alternative.

Family options include parental controls as well as the possibility of monitoring the health of your family’s devices. The password manager is hidden within the Edge browser and can sync to other devices. The downside is that you aren’t able to control the features directly through the app, and must use a web browser to access them.

It is different from other antivirus programs in that it doesn’t connect into the Windows Kernel. This can create new attack surfaces for hackers and cause instability to an operating system. Additionally, it provides good behavioural protection and helps users avoid downloading malicious files.
