Aftercare
Scalp micropigmentation aftercare, session by session
How your SMP heals decides how it looks in a year. These are the instructions I give every client after a session in the Encino studio or on a mobile appointment, plus the mistakes that cost the most pigment.
The healing timeline
What to do, and when to do it
SMP pigment settles into the upper layer of the skin, so the first month matters more than any single product. Follow the timeline below and let the skin do the rest.
First 24 hours
Keep it clean, keep it dry
Leave the treated area alone. Do not wash it, do not apply product, and do not let a hat, helmet or pillow sit on it for long stretches. A small amount of redness and light tenderness is normal and settles on its own. Skip the gym, swimming and saunas for the day, and avoid alcohol, which thins the blood and slows the settle.
Days 2 to 7
Wash gently, moisturise lightly
From day two you can rinse the area with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, patting dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing. A thin layer of the aftercare balm keeps the skin comfortable without smothering it. Do not pick, scratch or exfoliate, even if small flakes appear. Pigment sits in the upper dermis and any picking takes pigment with it.
Weeks 2 to 4
Expect it to look lighter before it settles
Around the second week the area often looks softer than it did on day one. This is the skin healing over the pigment, not the pigment disappearing, and it is the reason SMP is done in sessions with a gap between them. Sun exposure is the main thing to manage in this window: shade the scalp, wear a hat outdoors and keep sunscreen off the freshly treated area until the skin has fully settled.
Long term
Protection is what keeps it sharp
Once healed, treat your SMP like a good haircut: keep the scalp out of direct sun, use sunscreen daily, and avoid harsh exfoliants and strong chemical peels on the treated area. Most clients return for a light touch-up every two to four years to refresh density and sharpen the hairline edges.
Avoid
What sets healing back
Almost every case of patchy healing I correct has one of these behind it. None of them are dramatic, and all of them are avoidable.
- Swimming pools, the ocean and hot tubs while the skin is healing
- Saunas, steam rooms and heavy sweating for the first few days
- Shaving the treated area until it has fully settled
- Alcohol and blood thinners in the 24 hours after a session
- Sunbeds, direct sun and self-tanner on fresh work
Client notes
Aftercare reminders
First week
Shower, don't soak
Short, lukewarm showers only for the first week. Long hot showers steam the skin and soften the fresh pigment.
First 24 hours
Sleep on a clean pillowcase
Change the pillowcase after each session and try to sleep on your back for the first two nights.
First 24 hours
No product on day one
Skip oils, serums, minoxidil and styling products on the treated area until the skin has closed.
Long term
Sunscreen after it heals
SPF 30 or higher every day once healed. UV fades pigment faster than anything else.
First month
Skip the fade haircut for a week
Clippers on freshly treated skin can lift pigment. Wait until the area has fully settled.
Questions about healing, or about your own SMP
If you are healing from another practitioner's work, planning a correction, or simply unsure whether a change on your scalp is normal, send a photo through the contact form and I will tell you what I see. Every consultation is free, and the honest answer sometimes is that nothing needs doing. For a closer look at how the sessions themselves run, read the procedure page, or see healed results at the density most clients reach after their second session.
