The procedure

Scalp micropigmentation, explained without the sales pitch

What happens in the chair, how many sessions it takes, what numbing really does and how the result ages. If you want the short version: it is a controlled series of fine pigment deposits, done over two to three visits, and it should look like a close haircut.

What it is

Pigment, placed between the hairs you already have

SMP deposits tiny amounts of pigment into the upper dermis to mimic follicles. Nothing is cut, nothing is transplanted, and there is no downtime beyond a few days of care.

The look it creates is a closely shaved head with a defined hairline. That is its own aesthetic, and it is worth being clear about: SMP adds the appearance of density, it does not regrow hair. For a lot of men and women, that trade is exactly what they want — a permanent, low-maintenance finish without surgery.

The process

Four visits, in order, no shortcuts

A virtual consultation comes first, then hairline design. Most clients complete treatment in two to three sessions, four to six days apart — full coverage and correction work often need a fourth.

01

Virtual consultation, then hairline design

It starts with a virtual consultation: your pattern of loss, face shape, skin tone and how you actually wear your hair. The hairline is then drawn and agreed in person before anything begins.

02

First session — foundation

A light, even base layer is laid across the treatment area. It reads soft at this stage by design; density is built on top of it, not in one pass.

03

Second session — density

Four to six days later the pigment has settled. We add density where it matters and refine the transition between treated and natural hair.

04

Final session — detail & balance

Edges, temples and any unevenness are corrected. The result should look like a close buzz cut, not a drawn-on line.

Honest expectations

How long SMP lasts — without the marketing

SMP is semi-permanent, not forever. The pigment sits in the upper dermis and gradually softens with sun exposure, skin type and lifestyle. Most clients book a touch-up somewhere between three and seven years.

Fresh

Pigment sits crisp and slightly dark for the first week.

Settled

Once healed it softens into the surrounding hair.

3–7 years

Sun exposure quietly lightens it; a touch-up restores density.

I would rather tell you this now than have you find out in year four. Maintenance is part of the deal — sun protection and a touch-up when the density starts to go soft.

Comfort

Surgical-grade numbing, and an honest word about pain

Numbing is the difference between a long session and a long day. It is also the part of SMP most often oversold.

What I'll tell you plainly

You will feel the work. Most clients describe a light scratching or vibration, with more sensitivity at the temples. Surgical-grade numbing reduces that significantly for most people — but anyone promising a completely painless procedure is selling, not explaining.

Beyond topical cream

Cream alone sits at the surface and wears off mid-session. Surgical-grade numbing is applied and managed through the appointment, which is when it matters most.

Breaks whenever you need them

Sessions run two to four hours depending on the area. We stop when you want to stop; there is no clock running against your comfort.

Technique reduces trauma

Controlled needle depth and speed mean less irritation, and less irritation means the second hour feels like the first.

Before you arrive

Eat properly, hydrate, skip alcohol the night before. Small things, but they change how a session feels.

Aftercare

The first two weeks decide how it heals

Aftercare is not admin. Pigment retention depends on how the skin heals, which depends on what you do in the week after each session.

First 48 hours

Expect redness, tightness and a slightly darker tone than the final result. Keep the area dry and clean. No gym, no swimming, no sauna.

Days 3–7

Light flaking begins as the skin renews. Do not pick or scratch. Avoid direct sun and heavy sweating; a loose hat outdoors is fine.

Week 2 onward

The pigment settles into its true tone. Shaving can resume once the skin has fully healed. Sunscreen on a healed scalp protects the colour long term.
