Scalp Scar Camouflage in Los Angeles

SMP can break up the contrast of a scar so it stops reading as a line or a patch and starts blending into the surrounding hair.

Fine scalp micropigmentation dots softening a linear scar on a client's scalp

Scar camouflage is one of the more technical uses of scalp micropigmentation, and one of the most rewarding. A strip scar from a hair transplant, the clustered dots left by FUE, a burn or a surgical incision all share the same problem: the tissue is smoother and lighter than the surrounding scalp, so it catches light differently and draws the eye.

Rather than trying to cover the scar with a solid block of pigment, the work is to place fine dots above and through it so the contrast drops. From a normal viewing distance the eye reads hair, not scar. From up close you can still see the texture — and that's honest. SMP camouflages scarring; it doesn't erase it.

Straight talk

Scar camouflage works best when the scar is fully healed — usually at least 12 months after surgery. If a scar is raised, keloid or still changing, I'll advise waiting or referring you back to your surgeon before we begin.

What it can help with

  • Linear strip scars from FUT hair transplants
  • Clustered FUE extraction scars, especially at the donor area
  • Burns and traumatic scarring on the scalp
  • Surgical and biopsy incisions
  • Alopecia areata patches and small areas of bare scalp
  • Blending a scarred donor area into a short haircut

The approach

How this work is done here

Different tissues and different goals need different techniques. This is the order of operations.

01

Assess the tissue

Scar tissue takes pigment differently from normal skin — sometimes it holds less, sometimes more. We test and build gradually rather than committing heavily in one pass.

02

Match the surrounding hair

Pigment is chosen to sit between the shade of the scar and the shade of the hair around it, so the transition disappears at a distance.

03

Build in layers

Most scar work needs two to four sessions. Density is added slowly, which keeps the result soft instead of flat.
